Hello all!

Hi all! New here so please be gentle. This is also my first time reading Summer of Night, though I thrifted my copy several years ago and it was on TBR until the readalong announcement. It's falling apart though (someone really loved my copy) so I recently purchased a hardback. This is my first "real" book discussion group (as in NOT associated with school) so I'm really glad I found this opportunity. There are not very many reading groups where I live.

Other things about me... I have a BA in Creative Writing and Art and have written three novellas, started two novels, and several short stories and I've ghostwritten several books for others. I have a Bombay/Maine coon mix cat that watches TV (she likes sports) and I celebrate Halloween year-round... Really looking forward to meeting, reading, and talking with you guys!

This is also my first time reading. I've had it in my TBR pile since receiving the pin. Unfortunately I am already behind in the reading sector. Currently reading Silence of the Lambs. I thought I'd finish it in time but was wrong. I've only got 80 pages left and should be finished today. I don't like reading two books at once. I'm very keen for a book group and discussion as the only two where I live read YA and romance which is not my cup of tea.

Very jealous of your writing skills. I would love to take a writing course one day.
I am an Acute Psychiatric Nurse.
I have 2 dogs, 2 cats and a salt water tank.
I  Like gardening but hate weeding, I kill most plants.

How was Silence of the Lambs? I use past tense in case you finished it. I have only seen the movie, which I loved.

I can't blame you regarding those two genres. I was in a YA book group in high school and it was, well... Not my favorite. Some YA authors I like, like Holly Black, but I just have difficulty getting into YA. I edited and ghostwrote romance stories for a while though it's not necessarily something I gravitate towards. The industry for romance novels is huge though.

How was your gardening for you this year? I see you're in Australia. My family is only just starting... It's a little late but not terribly so. We got distracted by spring cleaning. We're focusing on vegetables this year and our bulbs from years before are sporting buds.

Silence of the Lambs was actually really good. I enjoyed it much more than the movie. Yes I had finished it. I'm still behind on the Summer of Nights though. I'm up to chapter 11. So far I'm really enjoying it and am tempted to have a sick day to catch up haha. How are you finding it?

I have to be in the mood for romance novels. Otherwise I get bored. It's ok if it's not the primary theme though.

What genre is easiest for you to write?

You mentioned before you celebrate Halloween every day. How so? I'm assuming it's not a dress up and knock on everyone's door celebration like I'm picturing haha. Unfortunately Halloween is not an Australian event, however it seems to be gaining more popularity year by year (although pretty commercialised so far).

All my bulbs die. All my plants die. I tried vegetables and herbs and failed. Except chives they are going awesomely haha. It's very hot and humid where I live so I'm trying my hand at succulents and cacti. They require little attention and can be beautiful when they thrive.

As today is the cutoff for chapter 15, I was just wondering if you got to it? and how are you finding the book so far? This is an annual read for us, usually multiple times a year, but as weather gets warmer, its the perfect time for this read-along!

LOVING it so far. It's difficult to put down and I always get excited when I can come back. You should take that sick day.

I'd honestly say nonfiction (non-creative) is easiest for me to write. The research and writing itself are both equally straightforward for me. Romance was easy for me too though since it was just fluff. But I get much more enjoyment and fulfillment from fabulism and speculative fiction writing. My main genre is slipstream.

Wow really? I have some acquaintances in Australia who are obsessed with Halloween and throw parties. Maybe they're just outliers. I'm a giant kid so I keep decor up year round and I have an instagram dedicated to skeletons. I dress them up and pretend they're people. LOL. Don't judge me. I'll shamelessly plug it: it's @olletheskeleboy if you're so inclined...

Oh no!! Yeah, succulents are so low-maintenance plus they're so cute! I think they're easy to re-pot too. I don't know what sort of "family" this plant is but I have a mini cyclamen in my bathroom who doesn't need as much watering either.

I just finished tonight! I'm really enjoying it! Simmons takes great care with setting and characterization. I was taking detailed notes (anal, I know) but decided to abandon that, especially if you guys are having future readalongs for SofN. I want to savor it now and not worry about notes. The novel merits multiple re-reads.
